A must-include in your next visit to MOTAT, this exhibition space celebrates Kiwi ingenuity and innovation, one collection object or focus at a time. Get inspired by what happens when creativity meets technology.
This exhibition tells the stories of ShieldsUp and Hills Hats who pursued creative solutions to meet the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the eve of the lockdown in March 2020.
ShieldsUp rallied a community of makers with 3D printers all over New Zealand to print and deliver 18,000 face shields across the country in just over seven weeks.
"It was our way of showing aroha… of showing love and support for those personnel on the frontline. We can’t be there, but we have your back.”
Tim Carr, ShieldsUp Chief Ninja.
In Wellington, 145-year-old company Hills Hats diversified from making bespoke headwear to producing stylish and practical face masks for anyone who needed one.
“I knew what I wanted to achieve with the mask. The components are almost exactly the same from the first one we made.”
Simon Smuts-Kennedy, General Manager of Hills Hats
This exhibition captures the collective kindness, collaboration and innovative spirit shown by so many New Zealanders.
