Opening 2nd March

Te Mira Hau Partington’s Mill invites you to step into the world of 19th-century milling — an era before electricity powered progress and wind was a driving force of innovation.

Long before the Sky Tower defined Auckland’s skyline, six-storey Partington’s Mill stood tall on the ridge of Symonds Street. Built in 1850 by miller and engineer Charles Partington, the striking clay-brick windmill became both a beacon of industry and a powerful symbol of a growing city in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Through historic photography and carefully preserved heritage objects, discover how the mill harnessed the natural kinetic energy of wind at a time when most of Auckland relied on water power. Learn how its rotating cap allowed the enormous sails to turn into the breeze, capturing energy to hoist grain, drive machinery and power the grinding stones that produced wholemeal flour for a developing settlement.

The exhibition also explores the wider story of flour production in Aotearoa. From the first wheat grown by Ngāpuhi rangatira Ruatara in 1813 to the 37 Māori-owned mills operating across the Auckland region between 1846 and 1860. Wheat cultivation and milling played a vital role in shaping communities, landscapes and livelihoods.

Although Partington’s Mill was demolished in 1950, its legacy endures. Te Mira Hau Partington’s Mill brings the story of this remarkable windmill and the energy that powered it — back to life.

Please note: The Walsh Memorial Library is open Monday to Friday (only) and this exhibition is not open during weekends or public holidays.
