Celebrating 40 Years of Homosexual Law Reform
In 1986, New Zealand passed a landmark piece of legislation that decriminalised consensual relations between men aged 16 and older, establishing a uniform age of consent and laying the groundwork for the human rights protections that followed. This year marks 40 years since that milestone, and MOTAT is celebrating with a range of activities for the whole whānau.
Have a go at screen printing and create your own pride themed tote bag or tea towel with artist Ingrid Anderson in the Aviation Hall. Over at Great North Road, our Print Shop has also produced commemorative bookmarks for the occasion, free while stocks last.
At 2pm, we'll be joined by author Brad Poulter for a reading and signing of his new memoir, Built for This in the Aviation Hall. Brad is a New Zealand writer, veteran, and culture leader who served nearly 20 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, later moving into culture and inclusion work within the New Zealand Defence Force. Built for This is an honest, funny, and at times heartfelt account of his journey from small-town New Zealand to serving in Afghanistan, and of embracing his sexuality alongside the Navy's own evolution into one of the most inclusive defence forces in the world.
