We are here to help

MOTAT is committed to developing and improving access to MOTAT for all. If you need any assistance during your visit, please approach any member of the MOTAT team. Read below to plan your visit, and contact us before your visit about any access, support or information you may need.

  • We offer complimentary general admission to visitors with disabilities or particular access requirements. Carers also receive complimentary general admission. Just ask for the accessibility offer when booking or at the ticket counter.

  • Booking ahead of your visit is not essential but it is recommended so we can help you plan your visit and ensure your needs are met. We welcome bookings from both groups and individuals. Make your booking here.

  • MOTAT has joined the Hāpai Access Card scheme as part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility. If you are a Hāpai Access Card holder, you are welcome to present your card for assistance from our friendly MOTAT team.

Mobility Parking

Mobility parking at the Aviation Hall, Motions Road
Mobility parking is at the entrance to the Aviation Hall. No pre-booking is required.

Mobility parking at MOTAT Great North Road
Parking is inside the Museum gates so needs to be booked in advance. This can be done by calling 09 815 5800 or emailing enquiries@motat.org.nz.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Many of MOTAT’s public spaces are accessible, but as we are an operational museum spread over a large area with varying terrain, unfortunately not all areas are suitable for wheelchair access.

Areas with wheelchair access include exhibition halls and display spaces, the MOTAT Café and the MOTAT entrances and shops. Accessible toilet facilities and locations are shown on the map.

Unfortunately, our heritage trams at MOTAT are not accessible to people who use wheelchairs. We apologise we cannot provide this service. However, our Dockline trams at Wynyard Quarter have wide doors and can accommodate a wheelchair - boarding does need assistance.

We have a limited number of wheelchairs available for free to use while you are at MOTAT.

Please ask a Visitor Host at the ticket desk. Sorry, but we don't have mobility scooters available for hire.

Assistance dogs

Certified disability assist dogs are welcome at MOTAT. We are a museum and do not permit any other animals on site. You may be asked to present proof of certification.

Sound Sensitivity

MOTAT is a live museum with several working items that can produce loud noises. Ask our friendly Visitor Hosts about what loud noises may be heard on the day you visit.

For those who experience sound sensitivity, a limited number of earmuffs are available to use during your visit. These are free of charge and available from the ticket counter at both MOTAT locations.

MOTAT is quietest after 2.30pm each day.

Your safety is important to us

If at any time you feel unsafe or would like to give us feedback, please approach a Visitor Host or other MOTAT Team member. In the event of an emergency, please be assured that we have procedures to safely move and evacuate all visitors.
